About this platform
Visit World Heritage Europe is a platform for travellers who want to go beyond the obvious - discovering Europe through authentic stories, remarkable landscapes, local traditions, and carefully curated tours across some of the continent's most beautiful regions.
The platform was created by Ronald Swensson. Since 2018, he has been building and refining this platform, driven by a personal approach rather than an encyclopaedic one. It is not an exhaustive description of every region, but a curated selection of what is fascinating, unexpected, historically meaningful, or simply enjoyable. He immerses himself in local life to experience destinations the way locals do. The result is a platform that is inspiring, sometimes surprising, but never dull.
World Heritage sites in Europe are more than monuments; they are living stories about Europe's past and present. They reflect the cultural richness and diversity that continue to shape the continent today. This platform aims to strengthen awareness of that heritage and spark the curiosity to experience it firsthand. Because it is precisely this shared experience that reminds us what connects Europeans across borders: united in diversity.
Travelling responsibly matters. Visitors are encouraged to respect local traditions, support local businesses, and help preserve Europe's cultural and natural heritage for future generations. These tips will help you do just that.
Tools for the curious traveller
We have developed a suite of digital instruments designed for those who want to navigate Europe on their own terms. Our Europe Discovery Toolbox has its own distinct identity—and deliberately so. Forget standard solutions; this is a toolkit for those who prefer to pave their own way. Anchored in European history—represented by the Mont Saint-Michel icon—it provides the essentials for anyone ready to take the helm and master the challenge independently.
We have now officially launched our Europe Discovery Quests. If the Toolbox is your map, the Quests are your game plan. They go beyond the map — turning your habits into an identity, your intentions into a plan, your indecision into an adventure, your travel history into a milestone, and your fleeting moments into something worth keeping. Part game, part companion, they're here to make every step of the journey feel a little more like your own.
How it works
The platform operates as a flexible discovery system rather than a static guidebook. It is organized into three main navigation modes:
Browse by Region: You can select specific geographic regions—such as Alsace, Andalucía, the Scottish Highlands, or Tuscany. Within each region, the platform provides a series of curated tours that cover everything from local cuisine and wine routes to historical landmarks and outdoor activities.
Explore Thematic Journeys: If you prefer to follow a narrative across borders, the platform offers "Thematic Journeys". These are based on historical and cultural concepts that span across multiple countries, such as Hanseatic cities, Industrial Heritage and Roman Limes.
Use the Toolbox: This is the practical, navigational layer of the platform. The "Toolbox" is designed for the curious traveller who wants to customize their trip. It allows you to select tours that match your specific interests.
Engage with Quests: This is where discovery meets play. If the Toolbox is for the planner, the Quests are for the explorer. It's the final piece of the puzzle—turning your travel into something that feels a little more like your own.
Digital Integration: Google Maps
A key feature of the platform is its full integration with Google Maps. Every tour provided on the platform is accessible as a link or layer in Google Maps. You can use these maps to navigate directly from your smartphone or tablet. This works whether you are in the initial planning phase at home or actively moving between locations on the road.
In essence, the platform serves as a "set of instruments". It is built to be personal and selective, focusing on destinations that are historically meaningful or unexpectedly fascinating, allowing users to experience Europe in a way that feels more authentic and less like a standard package tour. Ready to explore? Start with a region, follow a journey, or simply let curiosity lead the way.
